New back yard landscape design for this lower Avenues, Salt Lake City residence transformed this formerly barren yard into a private oasis for the owners. Landscape designer Rick Laughlin, APLD, and contractor Rob Schocker followed the design and laid out a beautiful landscape that encompasses all of the owners’ needs. First a 30″ foundation for the walls was poured. Walls were constructed out of keystone blocks faced with halved rock face. Next 6″ of crushed base was laid for the patio and path way. Crushed gravel was laid down for the path way. Flagstones were laid for the patio and set with sand. A trellis is set at a 45′ angle to direct ones attention to the bench and water feature.

Irrigation was 200 class pvc pipes laid out and connected to Rainbird in line drip tubing. All planting areas were prepared with 6″ of organic compost tilled into the existing soil. The owner is color blind and all of the plants in the design were for sensory experience. Water-wise plants of trees, ornamental grass, perennials and ground cover were planted per the landscape design.

This back yard project completely changed the usability and beauty of this yard with water-wise features that will be sustainable and responsible for years to come. Mulch is probably one the most important steps in landscaping a property. Organic mulches have numerous benefits including increasing water absorption of sandy loam soils and reducing compaction and aeration benefits to silt clay loam soils. It also enriches and improves soil, reduces weeds during the growing season, retains soil moisture, reducing soil runoff by breaking up the rain droplets, increase soil fertility decomposition of the mulch, improves soil structure and gives us a better looking landscape bed.
