Around the Block: Swap out the standard and clunky metal knife block for a metal strip attached above the counter, where your favorite knives can rest and be at the ready. Plus, the flush knives may serve as a decorative element in your kitchen.

On the Rise: If storage is an issue, use metal rises in your cupboards to gain more usable space. Items will be within reach but off of the counters.

Paper Trail: Countertops are a flat surface, and flat surfaces tend to collect paper. The kitchen is the heart of the home, so it is not usual to have school paperwork, bills, junk mail and other notices on the counters. The solution: Hang decorative files that can corral paper until you have time to process it.

Going Mobile: If your problem is lack of counter space, remedy this with a mobile cart that can act as an instant kitchen island and storage center. The cart can offer extra work space, be moved around the kitchen as needed, and be put away in a corner when not in use.

Daily Essentials: Take a good look at the small appliances, tools and other items on your countertop, and pare down anything you don’t use on a daily basis. Store other items, placing infrequently used devices and tools in less convenient spots.
