We all know booking that vacation to the islands or to the shore would be ideal right about now but realistically it’s not always in the family budget. A cheaper, easier way to get that feeling of a relaxing mini getaway could be right in your own backyard! Taking aspects of previous vacations spots and resorts can give you some great ideas for your backyard. Transform your backyard into your new private getaway with these creative tips.

Bringing your backyard back to life for summer can be difficult but with a patio or deck refresh this may solve that problem. Stick with a clean, fresh, one-color palette when thinking of starting this project. By refreshing tile or wood paint and stains and adding contemporary stools, an umbrella and a glass table will make a world of difference in your backyard this season.

Fill your backyard with oversized plants and trees for an exhilarating tropical vibe. A Windmill Palm Tree is an extra-large cold-hardy palm tree that will automatically give you the feel that you are on an island.  The tree itself is very strong and can withstand various weather conditions.  The palm can reach up to 20-30 feet high and is great to locate around a pool or a deck.  The trees palms act as an elegant awning that provides protection to your structures and creates enormous amounts of shade. Highly resistant to all pest and disease, this tree is the ultimate homeowners tropical dream.

Another great taste of the tropics is the Basjoo Banana Tree.  This tree is also a cold-hardy tree which is highly resistant to low temperature conditions, letting you enjoy the tree year long. The Banana Tree is a no-maintenance tree that can reach up to 16-20 feet.  With these bright green striking leaves, it will make any deck or patio into a mini jungle-like retreat.

With a Windmill Palm Tree or a Basjoo Banana Tree, your backyard decor instantly goes to island time creating a beautiful backdrop to your once dull yard.

Your pool could use some summer ambiance with fun flamingo and palm pool floats.  These are comfy to lounge on but also give you a fun design accent to your tropical backyard theme. Traditional flat pool chairs are a given for any backyard pool, but some of the new innovative pool chairs lay a quarter way in and even all the way into a pool which can promote a resort-like feel at home. With in-water furniture, benefits are limitless. From coffee tables, to bar stools, the retail market offers every type of style and coloring you need.  Whether you’re adding a lounge cushion with water-resistant fabric or a more advanced full water piece, you surely be able to fully relax and enjoy your backyard mini-vacation.

Don’t have a backyard pool? That’s ok you can add a swinging day bed or chair.  This will give you the relaxing yet elegant feeling of laying under a palm tree on a beach near an ocean.  You can even make your own swinging bed by merely buying an inexpensive mattress and some metal or rope swing mechanical products from any hardware store. By creating it yourself you can customize your design by choosing your own color scheme and ideal cushions (Tip: make sure all materials are durable for outdoors.)  Having a resort-like swinging bed in your backyard will bring you that much closer to feeling like you’re in paradise.

You worked hard, you can use a vacation, so save that money you busted you butt for and start enjoying your own backyard!
