Chalkboard paint can be a fun DIY decor project. Here is everything you need to know to apply it.
Chalkboard paint can be a fun DIY decor project. Use chalkboard paint to create a family command center, a chic and functional kitchen accent wall, or to offer a safe scribble space in the playroom.
To get professional grade results follow our step by step process to apply chalkboard paint.
STEP 1: Get the best supplies.
STEP 2: Take the time to sand your wall or surface with fine grit sandpaper. Smoothing out the bumps and creating an even surface is important to the final piece, so don’t skip this step.
STEP 3: Prepare the now smooth surface with a coat of primer. This will ensure that the chalkboard paint sticks well and lasts a very long time, even with heavy use.
STEP 4: Gently stir the paint for a full minute. You want to go slow and steady. Stir too vigorously, and the components of the chalkboard paint may break down, resulting in a surface that will not take the chalk well.
STEP 5: Apply at least two coats of the chalkboard paint. The goal is to create a solid, uniform surface.
STEP 6: Allow your new chalkboard surface to dry and cure for at least three days before attempting to write upon it.
STEP 7: Season the surface of the paint to prevent chalk marks and scratches embedding themselves permanently into new decor. Using the side of a piece of chalk, rub liberally all over the surface and allow this to sit for a few minutes. Next, wipe it clean with a dry cloth. Re-treat the chalkboard paint surface this way every few months or whenever it has been wiped with a wet cloth.
