10 Win-Do's and Don'ts of Replacement Windows

Home Value | Superior Window Company

Replacement windows can make a noticeable difference in the interior and exterior appeal of your home. On top of that, they can make your home quieter and more energy efficient.

That being said, here are 10 Win-Do's and Don'ts to get the optimum value out of your windows.

Win-Do’s

1 DO replace old, drafty windows. If you struggle to open your windows, have high utility bills, and have rooms that are always cold in the winter and hot during the summer, then it’s time to get some replacement windows.

2 DO consider selecting reinforced vinyl for your window frame material. It's a more effective insulator than wood and doesn't require routine painting and resealing. Additionally, the extra reinforcement will prevent warping in hot climates.

3 DO fill up your multi-pane windows with odorless, colorless non-toxic gas. Specific gasses such as Argon and Krypton provide extra insulation value, making your home even more energy efficient.

4 DO make sure to use Low-E Coated Glass. A special coating on windows helps keep out heat-causing infrared rays and fabric-damaging UV rays. All of this is accomplished without reducing the amount of visible light that comes into your home so you can enjoy the natural light of the sun whenever you want.

5 DO consider the exterior color of your window frames. Some materials and companies offer a limited number of color options. Opt for a color that will complement the rest of your home and the environment around it.

Win-Don’ts

1 DON’T choose single pane replacement windows. Single pane windows offer inferior sound and temperature resistance. They will not do much to improve the energy efficiency of your home.

2 DON’T let the budget choose your window frame material. Installing cheaper materials like aluminum will cost more in the long run as these materials offer very little insulation value.

3 DON’T skip out on doing your research. Make sure you get quotes from more than one company and find out what options they offer. There are several choices to make in regards to window style, frame material, glass, and color. Every company may not have what’s best for you.

4 DON’T ignore the weather where you live. Regular vinyl (unreinforced) and wood have a tendency to shift around in harsh weather conditions leaving gaps and cracks where the elements can penetrate into your home.

5 DON’T stick to boring window designs. A common window type is the single-hung window—only the bottom half slides up. Think slider, casement, and awning windows to make your home stand out.
