After the Grill is Gone

You don’t want to be stuck with a faulty grill before prime grilling season hits. Here is how to tell if your grill needs to be replaced or just maintained.

You don’t want to be stuck with a faulty grill before prime grilling season hits. Here is how  to tell if your grill needs to be replaced or just maintained.

Grate News: New grill grates can be expensive, but food should not be cooked on coated grates that are peeling or flaking. The coating can stick to food and be ingested. Before replacing grates, do price comparisons. It might make more economical sense to replace the whole grill instead of just the grates, especially if your unit is older than three years.

Don’t Be a Drip: Inspect the firebox and drip pans on your grill. Light corrosion can be removed with a stainless steel brush, but if there is extensive rust or any cracks, the grill has got to go. Lining the drip pans with aluminum foil to compensate for holes or weaknesses is a bad idea. Grease can collect on the foil and catch on fire.

Flame On: Uneven heat, uneven flames or yellow flames are signs that it is time to clean and check the burner tubes or ports. If there is any rust or corrosion present, you will need to replace the burners. Some burners may still be covered under warranty, so check before you buy.

Bubble Means Trouble: Gas grills should be tested for gas leaks. A mixture of water and dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle will reveal all. Spray the solution along the hose and on any connections. Start the gas. Leaks will show up as bubbling along cracks or pinholes. Tighten the connections or replace the hose as needed.

Slow Burn: If you set your grill to 500 degrees but it never gets past 250 degrees, all may not be lost. You may have inadvertently set off the gas control safety device on the regulator. Refer to your grill’s manual to reset your grill and solve the problem.
