5 Tips for a Healthy Summer Lawn

Exterior & Landscaping | HGDI ADMIN

From barefoot cartwheels to blazing sun, your summer lawn has to be able to stay healthy throughout the season, no matter what is thrown at it, sometimes literally.

With proper care, the grass CAN be greener on your side.

Make a Clean Cut

Dull mower blades will tear at your grass, leaving jagged edges and damaged leaves instead of a clean cut. When this happens, your lawn is more vulnerable to disease and more likely to fail. Learn to sharpen your blades yourself or send them out for sharpening. Schedule this after every twelve hours of use, sooner if you hit obstacles, such as twigs or rocks while mowing.

Get to Know Your Lawn

Test kits, which cost less than $20, can tell you a lot about your lawn. Getting complete measurements of the amount and type of nutrients available in the soil, as well as the pH levels can give you a game plan for optimizing your lawn care. Serious lawn jockeys might want to skip the home test, which has limits on its accuracy, and go straight to a professional analysis.

Fertilize from the Outside In

Apply your fertilizer first to the outside edges of your lawn and then work your way in toward the middle. Each pass should overlap just a little bit. A slow-release, organic fertilizer is a good choice for summer. Your lawn should respond quickly.

Got Milk?

Soil that is low in calcium encourages weeds to flourish. Calcium helps your lawn take in nutrients and starve the weeds. Spreading high calcium lime over your lawn may help cut down on the weeds in your lawn.

Pull Weeds in the Damp

After a summer rain, new weeds may sprout, but that is just the time to pull them up, when the soil is moist and the weeds are not well established. Survey your lawn the day after a shower, and remove any weeds you find.
