Have you ever had a waterfall of plastic containers and lids tumble down on your head? It is time to put the lid on container clutter with the following tips. We’ll help you get it all under control.

Hunt and Gather: Start by collecting all of your plastic containers in one place. Separate everything out and start matching containers to lids.

Survival of the Fittest: Be ruthless and only keep plastic containers that are both essential and in good condition.

Get rid of:

  • Containers and lids without matches.
  • Recycled food containers and tubs (The plastic used in disposable food containers is not made to be reused, so it degrades quickly. This can lead to possible ingestion of chemical toxins.)
  • Stained or damaged pieces.
  • Odd sized containers.
  • Anything that you haven’t used in at least six months.

Make an Investment: You may want to consider making a fresh start with a good quality matched set of containers. Designed to work together, each piece in a complete set will stack well together and take up less space in your cabinets.

Bonus Tip: Square containers take up less space than round ones do.

Group Think: Store smaller containers inside larger ones to save on space. If you are short on shelf, cabinet or drawer space, consider placing the larger nested containers in pretty matching storage boxes and keep them on a wall shelf.

Put a Lid on It: Lids can be hard to keep organized. There are several ways to contain them, depending on your preference. Here are some ideas for storing lids:

  • Place them all (in size order) in a zippered plastic bag.
  • Install shelf or drawer dividers to keep similar lids stacked together.
  • Hold lids upright with a small napkin holder or dish drying rack.
  • Install a cupboard door hanging rack to keep the lids handy.

The Ultimate Food Container Storage: Finally, if you really want convenient storage for your plastic containers, there is nothing better than installing a custom sliding drawer in your kitchen. A pull out drawer will keep those containers handy and organized, and you will have zero chance of being attacked by an avalanche of plastic storage.
