Make your hardworking appliances run more efficiently with these ten-minute tune up tasks.

Make your hardworking appliances run more efficiently with these ten-minute tune up tasks.

Fridge: Use an inexpensive coil brush or the vacuum’s crevice tool to remove the dust from your refrigerator coils. Dusty coils make the fridge work harder than it needs to do.

Microwave: Add a half lemon to a bowl of water and zap it in your microwave for five minutes. This will loosen grime and freshen your unit. Wipe down the walls of your microwave, and you are done. Learn more uses for lemons here

Coffee Maker: Run a pot with a mixture of half water and half vinegar. Then, do a rinse of water only. Add a pinch of baking soda to the carafe. If the baking soda bubbles, then you know there is still some vinegar left behind.  Repeat the rinse until there is no more bubbling.

Pod Coffee Maker: These convenient coffee makers that brew with the use of coffee pods or cups can have a build up of scale from the minerals in tap water. Purchase descaling “cleaning cups” for use in your brewer, and use them every three-to-six months.

Garbage Disposal: Grind up a few ice cubes to clean the blades and get rid of odors at the same time.
